Intel, one of the long-standing research partners of CERN openlab, is renewing its commitment by signing up to CERN openlab’s fifth phase. After twelve years of technical projects in support of the LHC research programme, CERN openlab is now moving beyond high-energy physics to include other large research institutions. This will see CERN openlab extending further into fields related to data analytics, healthcare, innovation and entrepreneurship. Part of this expanded research agenda will see Intel and CERN openlabestablish a programme to identify innovative ideas and support young researchers looking for entrepreneurship experience.
In order to improve the speed and effectiveness of research, one specific project in this new three-year phase of CERN openlab will work on modernizing the Geant software simulation toolkit, which is widely used in space, particle and medical research. The modifications being worked on could deliver as much as a 5-times performance improvement over the previous version.

Other collaborative research projects between Intel and CERN openlab with a more direct business application will cover areas such as data analytics for LHC control data, software-defined infrastructure with Rack Scale Architecture, and data acquisition and filtering infrastructure design for future LHC runs after 2018.
