News highlights:
- Intel has opened an Internet of Things (IoT) Innovation & development lab in Haifa
- The lab will collaborate with local companies in developing smart solutions.
- The lab will focus on four areas: smart cities, smart homes, smart agriculture and smart transportation.
Intel today announced the establishment of an innovation and development lab for the Internet of the Things (IoT). Located in Intel's development center in Haifa, the lab will collaborate with local companies in novel IoT developments.
Considered as one of the fastest developing areas of the high tech industry, IoT is today in great demand. IoT is built around the idea of turning any device/object into a smart device/object by having it communicate with other devices, with the cloud and produce data that can be used to increase value.
To date, Intel has established four innovation centers across Europe and the Middle East in order to promote innovation and development of IoT solutions. Called IoT Ignition Labs, these centers are currently operating in The UK, Stockholm, Munich and Istanbul. The IoT Ignition Labs facilitate the collaboration between Intel, partners, companies and the overall ecosystem which develop IoT solutions.
The Haifa lab will focus on the following four areas:
- Smart cities: many cities in Israel are already promoting IoT projects, starting with Tel Aviv, which has been named a leading innovative smart city to Beer Sheba, Dimona and others. Intel is already involved in some of these projects.
- Smart Homes: Intel is developing a smart home solution to deliver the hardware, software and cloud services tying multiple device ecosystems ("things") into a single end-user experience. The gateway is an important component of this solution as it is a local, always on, always connected, managed and secured device. Intel gateway solutions address various market segments and home topologies. As such, the Intel Puma(tm) based gateway solution enables using a single box in the home for broadband router and local connectivity while running smart home services using the same platform. Combining multiple services on the same platform, in a robust/secured manner will enable world class user’s experience and drive services velocity.
- Smart agriculture: with Israel being a global leader in agriculture, Intel believes that technological solutions such as smart drip irrigation systems with IoT will enhance cultivation and crop yields even further.
- Smart transportation: Intel believes transportation and shipping offer multiple opportunities for improvement with IoT. Several Israeli companies, for example Cartsense, are already engaged in developing transportation solutions. Another area on which Intel focuses is in-car systems, for which it runs a dedicated development center in Germany.
"The IoT Ignition Lab will enable Intel and its partners to showcase IoT solutions to the public, including our customers, suppliers, partners and Israeli high tech companies," explained Guy Bar-Ner, Director of Israel Sales & Marketing. "In addition, it will serve as a meeting place for developers and companies that seek to develop IoT-based products."
Bar-Ner added that Intel has identified Israel as a global innovation hub for IoT. "There are hundreds of IoT companies and start-ups in Israel. We believe the growth potential of the IoT market in Israel is huge and untapped and look forward to working with relevant local companies and partners to help make the world a smarter place."
"Intel will gladly collaborate with anyone who is active in the IoT field or seeks to enter this area,". "We are sending out a clear and simple message: Intel is open for IoT business. Small or large, we are prepared to collaborate with anyone who will help us achieve our vision of having the Israeli IoT solutions run on Intel architecture."
Olga Okrent was named manager of the IoT Lab.
