Munich, June 9, 2011– University students and recent graduates¹ in the UK, France and Germany have until 1 July 2011 to enter the inaugural European Intel® Embedded Competition, Intel’s search for tomorrow’s novel embedded applications based on the Intel® AtomTM architecture. The Competition will award Europe’s top team 17,500€ in product development and marketing funding.
Already prevalent in embedded applications ranging from transportation to energy and digital signage, the Competition seeks to find new ways to use the Intel® Atom™ architecture by tapping Europe’s higher education talent. It builds on Intel’s vision to support the embedded Internet and create new connected smart devices that extend beyond the PC, from precision farming equipment to industrial robots or medical devices.
The competition is supported by the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE) based out of Germany and local education partners in the UK and France. To enter, teams or solo students simply have to submit an original embedded application to intelembeddedcompetition@intelchallenge.eu. Entries should include a description of the hardware, algorithms and protocols used, as well as details on how the product could be brought to market in no more than four pages.
“Europe has some of the world’s most enquiring and entrepreneurial young minds and we’re excited to see how they’ll apply their skills to creating tomorrow’s embedded applications,” said Prof. Dr. Mark Harris, Director Higher Education for Intel Europe. “Competition will be fierce to identify and submit innovative ways of bringing compute intelligence to a new range of connected devices that will create new markets and enhance the way we live and work.”
Once submitted, a panel of judges comprising Intel, Fraunhofer IESE and local education partners will select 15 semi-finalists (five per country) based on the market potential of each concept and the students’ plans to bring their product to life. Each team will receive 2,500€ and an Intel Atom-based hardware platform to develop their idea into a prototype, as well as technical guidance to include software support from Intel and travel support to showcase their product at the finals, which will be held during Intel® Challenge Europe in Sopot, Poland, from 26 – 28 September 2011. One team per country will be named champion at the Challenge and will receive an additional 5,000€ in development funding. Each country winner will then offer a 5 – 7 minute presentation to a judging panel at the event to win an extra 10,000€ and will be crowned Europe’s overall winner.
The search for the next embedded application will be held alongside the Intel® Challenge Europe competition finals, where university students will present business plans that use technology to create new market opportunities. Now closed for entries, the Challenge drew hundreds of submissions from more than 41 European counties, all of which are now being reviewed by local judging panels.
