On October 22 and 23, 2013 Intel will bring together over 300 delegates from academia, government, industry and the media at the Research@Intel Europe and the Intel European Research and Innovation Conference (ERIC) in Nice, France.
Intel European Research and Innovation Conference
The theme of ERIC 2013 is ‘building a smart, sustainable and inclusive society through research and innovation partnership.’ The focus includes connected cities, computer architecture and design, high performance computing and exascale, mobility and network technologies. Attendees have the opportunity to deepen their areas of expertise, network, as well as collaborate with academia, industry, government and Intel representatives.
Research@Intel Europe
Christian Tordo, the deputy mayor of Nice, officially opens the Research@Intel Europe technology showcase 2013. Martin Curley, Intel vice president and director of Intel Labs Europe, will unveil more than 14 innovative research projects. The research projects explore technologies that enrich lives with smarter cities, homes and offices, and with smarter ways to learn, communicate and interact.
Intel establishes Intel Parallel Computing Center Program
Intel Parallel Computing Centers are universities, institutions and labs that are leaders in their field. The centers are focusing on modernizing applications to increase parallelism and scalability, as well as to enable significant performance increase. The centers are developing a curriculum to equip scientists, students, partners and computer scientists with the skills to fully leverage the capabilities of parallel computing resources. By enabling the advancement of parallelism, the Intel Parallel Computing Centers will accelerate discovery in the fields of energy, finance, manufacturing, life sciences, weather and beyond. Initially the Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum für Informationstechnik Berlin, CINECA Bologna, the University of Texas, the University of Tennessee and the Purdue University will be part of this new program.
Expansion of the Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Secure Computing
At ERIC 2013, Intel announced the launch of a “spoke” institute in Finland, which is affiliated with the Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Secure Computing in Darmstadt, Germany. The new institute will be a collaborative venture between Intel and the University of Helsinki. It will be jointly led by Prof. Asokan (University of Helsinki) and Matthias Schunter (Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Secure Computing). The goal of this venture is to conduct research that creates new areas of “Usable Mobile Security” to make smartphones and tablets safer.
Intel Labs St. Petersburg celebrates its 10th anniversary
The Intel Labs Europe founding member, Intel Labs St. Petersburg, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. It focuses on research in system-on-a-chip (SoC) design, development and architecture. The lab has achieved more than 300 invention disclosures and 100 patents in the last 10 years. It also influenced numerous Intel products and contributed to many international standards.
Intel Labs Honors Top European Faculty and Doctoral Students
Intel Labs’ University Program Office returns to ERIC to honor top European faculty and doctoral students through its Early Career Faculty Honor Program and its Doctoral Student Honor Program. A total of six professors and 13 doctoral students will be honored during the ERIC ceremonies. The Early Career Faculty Honor Program was created to promote the careers of the best and brightest early career faculty members at the top universities around the world. The Doctoral Student Honor Program awards fellowships to exceptional Ph.D. candidates pursuing leading-edge innovation in fields related to Intel’s business and research interests in Europe.
European students discover new ways of interacting with computers
Perceptual computing will fundamentally change how people interact with their PCs in intuitive, natural and engaging waysusing nothing more than gestures and spoken commands. The Creative® Interactive Gesture Camera is the cornerstone of Intel’s gesture-based interaction initiative. With the Intel® Perceptual Computing Software Development Kit (SDK) 2013, developers can create exciting new applications that take advantage of the SDK’s core capabilities: close-range hand & finger tracking, speech recognition, face analysis and augmented reality. During the Perceptual Computing Workshop as part of ERIC, students will have the opportunity to discover these new ways of interacting with computers.
